What is the Service?

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that works with people to improve their ability to move and function.

Physiotherapy offers individual patient assessment and management, and group programs. Each department has a well-equipped gymnasium and Broadmeadows Hospital also operates a hydrotherapy pool for aquatic programs. If required, physiotherapists may provide home-based therapy in the patient’s own home. Physiotherapists work closely with other Allied Health professionals and General Practitioners to best improve a patient’s health.

What do I bring/need for my appointment?

You will be advised by your physiotherapist what to bring to the appointment. It is recommended to dress in clothes that allow movement and to wear appropriate footwear. If completing exercises or attending a group you may be advised to bring a drink bottle.

Service Overview

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that works with people to improve their ability to move and function. Physiotherapists can offer a range of interventions, services and advice to improve a person’s health, function and wellbeing. The evidence-base underpinning physiotherapy is strong and constantly evolving as practitioners develop new knowledge and understanding through critical reflection, evaluation and research. Northern Health Physiotherapy maintains strong links between clinical and academic settings and is responsive to developments in practice, education and research.

Physiotherapy services are provided across all Northern Health campuses in inpatient (acute & continuing care), ambulatory and community settings. The large department of over 120 staff supports subspecialties in the areas of musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiorespiratory, paediatrics, pain, continence, pelvic health, aquatic and emergency physiotherapy. Experienced, post-graduate trained physiotherapists provide primary contact clinics and services in the Emergency Department and as part of the outpatient orthopaedic and pelvic health clinics.

The Associate Director Allied Health – Physiotherapy & Exercise Physiology is supported by four Physiotherapy Clinical Leaders who have responsibility for particular service areas. The department staffing includes Physiotherapists, Exercise Physiologists and Allied Health Assistants.

Physiotherapists provide services in the following locations/programs:

Northern Hospital Epping

  • Emergency Department (ED) / Short Stay Unit (SSU)
  • Inpatient Units – adults, paediatrics, and neonatal
  • Day Procedure Unit (DPU)
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Pre-Admission Clinic
  • Hospital in the Home
  • Rehab in the Home

Bundoora Centre and Broadmeadows Hospital

  • Geriatric Evaluation and Management Unit (Bundoora and Broadmeadows)
  • Rehabilitation Unit (Broadmeadows)
  • Acute Inpatient Unit (Broadmeadows)
  • GEM at Home
  • GEM at Kilmore

Ambulatory and Community Programs

(Northern Hospital Epping, Bundoora Centre, Broadmeadows Hospital, and Craigieburn Centre)

  • Community Therapy Service (CTS) including home and centre based care Subacute Ambulatory Care Services (SACS) – Bundoora, Broadmeadows, and Craigieburn
