Northern Health’s new state of the art Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is located at Northern Hospital Epping and consists of 18 beds. Our critical care nurses pride themselves on providing exceptional collaborative care servicing approximately 1,600 admissions annually (pre-COVID).

Our ICU is staffed by certified critical care nurses and intensive care specialists who care for a range of patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. The Northern ICU has an average admission rate of three admissions/discharges per day. Typical admissions include multiple organ failure support secondary to sepsis, renal failure, respiratory failure requiring advanced mechanical ventilation support post-operative support.

The Northern ICU provides an outreach service to all Northern Hospital Epping inpatients 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The service consists of an ICU Liaison Nurse and ICU medical staff members (Consultant/Registrar) who also are the key responders to deteriorating patient calls (MET and Code Blue).

The team sees approximately 3,600 emergency calls per year and service a number of different specialty areas and patient demographics (maternity, paediatric and adult). The ICU Liaison Nurse assists with timely reviews of patients with complex care management needs on the inpatient wards and provides consultation, clinical support and leadership for medical, nursing and allied health staff involved in the management of patients who are at great risk of clinical deterioration.

The Northern Health ICU is committed to the education and professional development of its team members. We are accredited for medical training in the field of ICU by the College of Intensive Care Medicine, and are also accredited for postgraduate certificates in critical care nursing.

• Bi annual STEP intakes
• Bi annual postgraduate intakes
• Rotation opportunities to other emergency services areas such as cardiology and emergency nursing
