What is the Service?

The Pharmacy Department seeks to meet completely all pharmaceutical needs of patients on the different campuses of Northern Health, according to each facility’s service profile.

Our mission is to serve the changing needs of Northern Health and the wider community.

We aim to provide a service that meets customer expectations, relevant professional standards and ACHS guidelines.

We recognise the importance of our staff and will provide a productive work environment that encourages teamwork, professional development, education and research.

What can I expect from the service?

The Pharmacy Department offers many services – including the following:

  • Clinical Pharmacy Service
  • Drug Distribution
  • On Call Service (after hours/weekends)
  • Manufacturing
  • If your medication prescription is kept with the hospital pharmacy department and you need to request medication, please call 48 hours ahead of time on (03) 8405 8562.

What do I need to bring to the hospital?

Please bring with you/have available the following items:

  • Current medication
  • Current allergy history
  • Current Safety Net card
  • Current Medicare/Concession/Pension card
  • Current local doctor details
  • Regular pharmacy details 

Your prescription journey

    1. Hand the prescription to the pharmacist along with your Medicare Card, Healthcare Card, Repatriation Card, Safety Net Card, Pensioner Concession Card, Commonwealth Health Card.
    2. The pharmacist will ask you some questions such as, have you ever had an allergic reaction to medication.
    3. The pharmacist will check details of prescription and if needed will phone the doctor to discuss the prescription.
    4. The medication is then taken from the stock.
    5. The medication is checked to make sure it is correct.
    6. The medication label is produced, checked and placed on the medication box or bottle along with any other labels needed.
    7. A second person will then recheck the medication and prescription to make sure the information on the prescription and quantity of medication is correct.
    8. The pharmacist will explain how to take the medication, answer your questions and provide you with an information sheet before giving you the medication.
    9. This process can take up to one hour.

How much does it cost?

Medication given to you during your hospital stay is free of charge. You will only be charged for medication you are given on discharge to take home.

An invoice will be in the bag with your medication. Your payment options are:

Open 9 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Friday (closed on public holidays and weekend)

Bundoora Centre – located on the left, before the Main Reception
Open 8.30 am to 4 pm Tuesday and Thursday (closed on public holidays)

Broadmeadows Hospital – located in the Main Reception
Open 8.30 am to 4 pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday (closed on public holidays)

  • Drug distribution
  • Drug Information
  • On-call service (after hours/weekends)
  • Manufacturing
  • Clinical trials
  • Preparation of chemotherapy
  • Sterile and extemporaneous manufacturing of pharmaceuticals
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate education

Contact the on-call Pharmacist via the Duty Nursing Supervisor who will contact the on-call Pharmacist via switchboard.
