What is the Service?
Cardiac Rehabilitation is a comprehensive education and exercise program for all people who have had a recent cardiac event or are at high risk of developing coronary Heart disease. The program is run by a specialist cardiac trained nurse and physiotherapist or exercise physiologist. There are other allied health professionals who are involved in the education components of the program. Cardiac Rehabilitation program is offered during the day and the evening.
What can I expect from the service?
Each participant has an individually designed program and aims to optimise function, improve self-management and decrease risk of further events. Clients participate in education and exercise program for 4-6 weeks.
Cardiac Rehab is held at 3 Northern Health sites:
Bundoora:
Every Thursday for 6 weeks
Craigieburn:
Day Program: Every Monday for 6 weeks
Evening program: Every Monday for 4 weeks (currently on hold)
The Northern Hospital Epping:
Every Friday for 6 weeks
What do I bring/need for my appointment?
Please bring a list of current medications, relevant scans or results.
How much does it cost?
- No cost for attending Cardiac Rehab.
- If client is referred onto additional Community Therapy Services, there may be a fee incurred of $5-10 per visit.
- If client is ineligible for Medicare the referral for the service will need to be reviewed by management

Inclusion criteria:
- Recent cardiac event
- At high risk of developing coronary heart disease
- Intact cognitive function
- Able to walk at least 50-100mt
- Priority will be given to surgical referrals
Exclusion criteria:
- Unstable cardiovascular disease e.g. unstable angina, aortic valve disease, unstable pulmonary hypertension, uncontrolled arrhythmias
- Awaiting PCI, stage PCI or cardiac Surgery
- Heart Failure (refer to Heart Failure)
- Coexisting conditions that would limit ability to exercise in a group setting (e.g. cognitive impairment)
- Living in Nursing Home
- For the evening program offered the client must meet the above criteria and be of working age (under 65) and do not require an interpreter.
How to Refer:
Referral from any source will be accepted. Referral must include:
- Reason for referral
- Current and past medical history
- Information relation to the patient’s condition

Alternative service options:
Based on patient’s postcode and needs, the referral maybe redirected to an appropriate program.
Cardiac Rehabilitation programs are run across Australia and ideally the client should be referred to the facility offered closest to their home. This information can be found through the Heart Foundation website
