For Patients and Visitors
What is the Service?
The Northern Children’s Unit is a 22-bed ward that cares for children from young infants through to older teenagers. Children receive specialist medical and surgical treatment under the expert care of several different teams, including the General Paediatric, General Surgical, Orthopaedic, Plastics and ENT units. They will also be supported by allied health teams that include Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Mental Health, and Pharmacy. Lactation support is also available for mothers of young infants on the ward.
What can I expect from the service?
The Children’s Unit aims to be a friendly, nurturing, considerate and cohesive place where children can receive expert care. The delivery of care will aim to be family-centred and holistic, striving towards a satisfying hospital experience for our patients, their families and carers.
The “rights of children and young people” is the fundamental principal of care on the ward, ensuring that all children feel heard, involved, respected and protected. Parents’ concerns are taken seriously and they are encouraged to escalate their concerns to the medical and nursing staff on the unit. As every child has the right to be cared for by their parent/guardian we encourage a carer to stay with their child, and facilities are available for this to occur. All other visitors can attend during visiting hours.
We understand that hospitals can be a daunting place for children and their parents, so we strive to make the Northern Children’s Unit as child and family friendly as possible. There is a play and recreational room as well as distraction boxes and equipment to help children remain entertained during their stay. A designated parent room that has been provided by Ronald McDonald House is available to give parents their own quiet space, with toilet/shower facilities as well as coffee and tea.
