Children’s Continence

For Patients and Visitors

At Northern Health Craigieburn, we offer a Children’s Continence Service that specialises in the management of bladder and/or bowel dysfunction in children without a disability.

The service aims to support children :

  • who are 3-17 years of age.
  • with bladder and/or bowel problems -including – constipation and faecal incontinence (soiling), toilet refusal/avoidance, toilet training, daytime urinary incontinence (wetting) or urinary frequency/urgency and bed wetting.
  • to have increased independence and/or improved quality of life.

By providing a comprehensive continence assessment, education, management of continence issue and ongoing support.

What can I expect from the service?

The Continence Support Service can provide:

  • a Continence Nurse Consultant to undertake a detailed assessment and develop an individualised plan
  • ongoing management of continence issue
  • education and support for families and carers

Medicare card

Copies of any previous investigations e.g. xrays, blood or urine tests

Service Overview

Overall summary of the Continence Service:

  • The clinicians working within the Continence Service specialise in the management of bladder and/or bowel dysfunction.
  • The service provides assessment, diagnosis, management, education and support to improve continence for clients.
  • The service will also provide consultancy, education and support to carers, relatives and professional service providers.

What can be provided:

  • Comprehensive continence assessment
  • Client and carer education including ongoing support in relation to continence issue
  • Bladder retraining programs, Enuresis assessment and management, toileting programs, bowel regulation programs.


Inclusion criteria:

Children aged between 3-17 years

Exclusion criteria:

Children with a disability and/or NDIS plan.

Children under 3 years of age.

Children less than 6 ½ if being referred for Enuresis.
