What is the Service?
We perform operations or procedures on patients and care for them until they are well enough to return to their own home later the same day.
Your operation or procedure will be done by a surgeon, gastroenterologist, or specially trained nurse. You will also be looked after by our team of nurses, booking and clerical staff.
What can I expect from the service?
You will be given an appointment for an outpatient clinic, where you will see a doctor who specialises in what your problem is. After this visit, you may be told you need to have an operation or procedure arranged for a later date.
Operations and procedures are performed at Broadmeadows Surgical Centre or at The Northern Hospital.
We offer many different types of surgeries or procedures, including:
- General Surgery
- Opthalmology ( surgery on your eyes)
- Orthopaedic ( bones and joints)
- Plastic Surgery
- Urology ( kidney and bladder)
- Gynaecology ( ladies problems)
- Vascular (blood vessels)
- Thoracics ( breathing or lungs)
- Endoscopy ( looking at the stomach, bowel gall bladder)
What do I need to bring for my appointment?
- Medicare card
- Up to date list of your current medications
- Compact disc/images/ films/ xrays or results of any tests your GP has done to manage your problem
- The name and address of your family doctor.
- Something to read or listen to while you wait.
Our Team:
Our team consists of a Nurse Unit Manager, Specialist Nurses, Clerical staff, and Patient services attendants.
You may also see within the department, Surgical Doctors, anaesthetic doctors, theatre technicians, physiotherapists and students.

Service Overview
Northern Health offers day procedure and Endoscopy services at The Northern Hospital and Broadmeadows Surgical Centre.
The Day Procedure and Endoscopy Unit provides a comprehensive range of Surgical and Endoscopic Services, both electively, and via the Emergency Dept, for urgent cases.

Our endoscopists include gastroenterologists, surgeons, and a Nurse Endoscopist. Several specialists have additional experience in advanced endoscopy techniques. Our endoscopists work with a team of dedicated endoscopy nurses, endoscopy booking clerks and liaison nurses, along with clerical staff, to provide a high quality and patient centred service.
