NDIS Children’s Continence

What is the Service?

At Bundoora we offer a Continence Service that is for children with a disability requiring assessment and management for incontinence of bladder and or bowel dysfunction. This service is offered through the NDIS as we are a provider for this scheme. All referrals to this service will need to come from NDIA via your child’s plan. This service is only offered to children living in the council areas of Banyule, Whittlesea, Nillumbik, Darebin, Yarra, Hume and Moreland.

The service aims to support children with special needs

  • who are aged 5 to 18 years of age
  • with bladder and/or bowel problems (including ongoing constipation or diarrhoea, toilet training and bed wetting)
  • to have increased independence and/or quality of life
  • by providing an assessment, education and recommendations on a range of disposable and washable products
  • and support carers with the child’s continence needs

What can I expect from the service?

The Continence Support Service can provide:

  • a Continence Nurse Consultant to undertake a detailed assessment and develop an individualised plan
  • ongoing follow up and support
  • advice on a wide range of washable and disposable products including bed protection
  • education and support for families and carers
  • Home or clinic visit

What do I bring/need for my appointment?

Please bring a copy of your NDIS plan or relevant parts, details of billing process, a list of current medication.

How much does it cost?

The cost for this service will come from your child’s NDIS plan.

Recommended 3 hours for initial Assessment and 3 hours for follow up to be included in plan.

Service Overview

At Northern Health Continence Services are available for adults and children – including children with a disability.

Overall summary of the Continence Service:

  • The clinicians working within the Continence Services specialise in the management of incontinence and other bladder and/or bowel dysfunction.
  • The services provide assessment, diagnosis, management education and support to clients, carers, relatives and professional service providers to improve continence for clients.

What can be provided:

  • Comprehensive continence assessment
  • Client and carer education counselling and support in relation to continence
  • Bladder retraining programs, nocturia assessment and management, toileting programs, bowel regulation programs.
  • Equipment/aids prescription via appropriate funding schemes (e.g. SWEP/NDIA)
  • Catheter management- (note: no long term management)
  • Medication assessment
  • Facilitating access to trial products


Inclusion criteria:

Children with disabilities with NDIS plan that have Continence nursing in the pan

Available for municipalities of Whittlesea, Darebin, Banyule, Nillumbik, Yarra, Hume and Moreland

Service available is Nursing only.

Exclusion criteria:

No Specialist continence nursing on NDIA plan.
